The Unraveling: When God Rewrites What You Thought You Knew

Oct 15, 2025

There comes a moment in every season of growth when everything you thought you believed about yourself, about God, about life, suddenly stops making sense. Even after years of doing the work, healing, and becoming, I still find myself uncovering new truths about who I truly am.

The past few weeks have been particularly challenging. After walking through the death of a family member, I’ve found myself in what I can only describe as a holy orientation. A re-centering of everything I thought I knew. The beliefs I’ve carried, the patterns I’ve lived by, even the knowledge I’ve relied on, are all being called into question.

And though this space feels uncertain, I’m learning that sometimes God has to unmake what we “know” to show us what’s true.

The Unraveling

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been learning more about who I truly am. Even after all this time, I’m realizing that some of the things I thought defined me were really just layers of conditioning. Habits, beliefs, and behaviors handed down from family, culture, and even religion.

And conditioning is tricky… it feels like truth until you start to question it.

And questioning it feels dangerous.

But when I pulled the first loose thread, what was once neatly packaged began to unravel. I didn’t mean to destroy anything. I just needed to see what was real underneath. And that’s the thing about growth: it never feels clean or controlled.

What’s scary at first often turns out to be the very thing that sets us free.

LISTEN NOW TO THE UNRAVELING: WHEN GOD REWRITES WHAT YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW

The Revealing

When we unravel things in our life, a revealing starts to happen.

We begin to see ourselves in new ways. Things we thought we knew about ourselves we learn were nothing more than a facade, and the “real us” was underneath all along. The masks we’ve worn start to fall, and what’s underneath, our truest selves, finally begins to breathe.

We begin to understand things that used to not make sense.

This revealing happens over and over as we grow.

Growth isn’t a one-and-done process. It’s continual. New heights and new phases. You never know what might be the catalyst for a growth spurt.

It’s amazing how one simple moment, a paragraph in a book, a conversation, an argument, or a prayer can unravel decades of belief.

Something that opens a door inside you, and suddenly… You can’t go back to the old way of seeing.

Our minds want to hold onto what’s familiar, but the Spirit keeps calling us forward. And that calling? It’s relentless in its love and purpose.

God, Self, and Trust

Leaning into that call feels terrifying sometimes. Trusting God in the unknown isn’t always easy. But I’m learning that it’s in those moments, when I can’t see where I’m going, that I’m being invited to trust that He can.

And as I trust Him more, I also learn to trust myself.
Not the me the world conditioned, but the me He created.

I have learned to hold my beliefs up to the light and ask, “Is this truth? Or is this training?”

And when the answer shakes me, I remind myself:

Faith that’s never questioned isn’t faith...it’s conditioning.

When I let go and let God, something powerful happens.
The unraveling becomes a reweaving, a divine reconstruction of everything I thought I understood.

He’s not destroying me. He’s rebuilding me.
Not just my beliefs, but the way I see myself.

The unraveling isn’t the end; it’s the beginning of a deeper knowing.

Reflection + Reveal Practice

This week, I want to invite you to explore the parts of yourself that feel unsettled or uncertain.

Grab your journal and reflect on these questions:

  • What beliefs about yourself or God are beginning to feel too small for who you’re becoming?

  • Where might conditioning be masquerading as truth?

  • What thread is tugging at your heart right now, and are you willing to pull it?

Then, take a deep breath, and ask God to reweave what needs to stay and release what doesn’t.

Key Takeaways
