The Sound of Silence

Backyard scene featuring a pool, patio table, chairs, and potted plants under clear blue skies.

Morning Quiet

The sun is just beautiful, peeking over the house into the backyard, landing on our oak tree.

The house is so quiet this morning.

All I can hear is the hum of the refrigerator, Ginger occasionally snorting, the A/C blowing, my pen scratching across the paper, me popping my ankles, the distant whoosh of cars streaming by as people make their way to work, and an occasional beep from a smoke detector that needs batteries.

I am starting to hear Sean stir in the bedroom. It won’t be long until he emerges, ready to start his day.

There is so much that inundates our senses and our brains, even in the still quiet.

The more I listen for silence, the louder the world seems.

How do we learn to shut out all the noise?
How do we bring back focus and well-being to our souls?

How indeed.

Oh, how loud is the sound of silence?
